József Beszédes

Associate Professor

He graduated in archaeology from the Department of Archaeology at Eötvös Loránd University in 1997 and earned his PhD summa cum laude in 2005. In 2022, he achieved habilitation at Pázmány Péter Catholic University. His research focuses on the archaeology of the Roman provinces, with particular emphasis on the Aquincum legionary camp, the Roman settlement history of southern Budapest (including Albertfalva and Lágymányos), Roman stone carving and tomb sculpture, burial practices, and the late Roman fortresses of Pannonia, such as those at Tokod, Pilismarót, the fortress on March 15 Square, and the one near the Dagály baths.

He leads research projects investigating the late Roman fortresses of Tokod and Pilismarót, as well as the scientific programme dedicated to the archaeological material of the Aquincum Legion Camp.

Szilvia Bíró

assistant professor

She holds a bachelor's degree in archaeology, with a focus on Roman provincial archaeology and Classical archaeology, from Budapest, and earned her doctorate from Freiburg im Breisgau. Her research interests encompass the archaeology of Pannonia, Roman settlement networks and structures, frontier defense systems, and Roman pottery, as well as the archaeology of ancient religion, particularly Greek-Egyptian cults.

She has participated in numerous excavations in the Western Transdanubian region and has successfully organised dozens of archaeological exhibitions.

Balázs Major

Associate Professor

He pursued studies in archaeology, Arabic studies, and history at university, earning a PhD in archaeology from Cardiff University. His research focuses on Islamic archaeology, late antique and medieval settlement networks in the Eastern Mediterranean, medieval European and Middle Eastern military architecture, the archaeology and material culture of the Crusades, and ecclesiastical architecture and archaeology.

He leads multiple archaeological research programs both in Hungary (Esztergom, Kesztölc, Sárisáp) and internationally (Syria, Lebanon, Iraqi Kurdistan).

Lóránt Vass

assistant professor

He completed his university education at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, where he graduated in archaeology and history and earned his doctorate. Through various international research projects, he has worked as an archaeologist at Babeș-Bolyai University, the Mureș County Museum in Târgu Mureș, and the BTM Aquincum Museum.

His research interests include Roman provincial archaeology, material culture, bone carving, Roman frontier defense, the archaeology of Dacia and Pannonia, and the Roman eastern population in Pannonia.

He has participated as a researcher and archaeologist in several international excavations, including those in Budapest and Pilismarót, as well as national excavations in Romania, Albania, Austria, and Lebanon.

Róbert Lóki

research fellow

He graduated from the University of Pécs with a specialization in archaeology and history. Since 2015, he has been a staff member of the Archaeological Institute, contributing to several projects both in Hungary and abroad, including in Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraqi Kurdistan.

His research interests focus on non-destructive archaeological methods, with a particular emphasis on the application of ground-penetrating radar.

Eszter Kiss-Szabó Lókiné

research fellow

She graduated in archaeology from the University of Pécs, majoring in prehistoric archaeology with a minor in Roman provincial archaeology. She is currently pursuing her PhD studies at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of the University of Pécs.

Her research interests focus on the Middle Bronze Age and the application of non-destructive archaeological methods. Since 2015, she has participated in numerous research projects in Hungary (Iovia, Balatonszemes, Pilismarót, Tokod) and abroad (Ostia, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan) as a member of the Archaeological Geoinformatics Laboratory.
